"मी यज्ञाचा नाही तर दयेचा भुकेला आहे." प्रभू असे म्हणतो, "ते आपल्या संकटसमयी माझा धावा कळकळीने करून म्हणतील, चला, आपण परमेश्वराकडे परत जाऊ. कारण त्याने आम्हांला झोडले आहे व तोच आम्हांला बरे करील. त्याने आम्हांला जखम केली आहे व तोच पट्टी बांधील. तो दोन दिवसात आमचे पुनरुज्जीवन करील; तिसऱ्या दिवशी तो आम्हांला उठवून उभे करील आणि त्याच्यासमोर आम्ही जिवंत राहू. चला, आपण परमेश्वराला ओळखू. परमेश्वराचे ज्ञान मिळवण्यासाठी झटू. त्याचा उदय अरुणोदयाप्रमाणे निश्चित आहे. तो पर्जन्याप्रमाणे भूमी शिंपणाच्या वळवाच्या पर्जन्याप्रमाणे आम्हाकडे येईल."
हे एफ्राइम, मी तुझ्यासाठी काय करू ! हे यहुदा, मी तुला काय देऊ? तुमचे चांगुलपण सकाळच्या अभ्राप्रमाणे, लवकर उठून जाणाऱ्या दंहिवराप्रमाणे आहे. म्हणून मी त्याच्यावर संदेष्ट्यांच्या हातून कुऱ्ह्याड चालवली आहे. माझ्या तोंडच्या शब्दांनी त्यांना ठार केले आहे. माझा न्याय प्रकाशाप्रमाणे व्यक्त झाला आहे. मी यज्ञाचा नाही तर दयेचा भुकेला आहे. होमार्पणांपेक्षा देवाचे ज्ञान मला आवडते.

Hosea 6:1-6
"Come, let us return to the LORD: for he has torn us, that he may heal us; he has struck us down, and he will bind us up. After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will raise us up, that we may live before him. Let us know; let us press on to know the LORD; his going out is sure as the dawn; he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth." What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes early away. Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth, and my judgment goes forth as the light. For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

Luke 18:9-14
At that time: Jesus told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get. But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!" I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

चिंतन: उपवासकाळात 'पश्चात्ताप' ह्या विषयावर आपण विशेष लक्ष केंद्रित करतो. खरा पश्चात्ताप म्हणजे अंत:करणापासून दुष्ट कृत्यांचा त्याग करून परमेश्वराकडे परत फिरणे. इस्राएली लोकांनी परमेश्वराकडे परत फिरण्याचे आणि दुष्कृत्यांचा त्याग करण्याचे सतत आश्वासन दिले पण ते परत फिरले नाहीत. परमेश्वर यज्ञाचा नाही तर दयेचा भुकेला आहे. होमार्पणापेक्षा परमेश्वर कोण आहे हे आपण ओळखावे ही त्याची इच्छा आहे. अंतःकरणाचा नम्रपणाचा मला खरा पश्चात्ताप करण्यास प्रवृत्त करतो आणि मला खऱ्या परमेश्वराची ओळख करून देतो. आजच्या शुभवर्तमानात प्रभू येशू परूशी आणि जकातदार ह्यांचे उदाहरण देऊन परमेश्वरासमोर पश्चात्तापी अंतःकरणाने नम्र होणे म्हणजे काय हे दाखवून देतो. परूशाने अहंकारामध्ये स्वतःला परमेश्वरासमोर इतरांपेक्षा श्रेष्ठ सिद्ध करण्याचा ढौंगीपणा केला, म्हणून त्याला नमवण्यात आले. उलट जकातदाराने पश्चात्तापी अंतःकरणाने आपले उर बडवीत देवाच्या दयेची याचना केली, म्हणून त्याला नीतिमान ठरवण्यात आले. परमेश्वराला आपल्या अंतःकरणाचा नम्रपणा हवा आहे. ह्या उपवासकाळात जकातदाराप्रमाणे पश्चात्तापी अंतःकरणाने आपण कबूल करू या की परमेश्वरासमोर उभे राहाण्यास आपण अपात्र आहोत आणि परमेश्वराच्या दयेची आपणांस विपुल प्रमाणात आवश्यकता आहे.
प्रार्थना : हे प्रभू येशू, मज पाप्यावर दया कर, मला तुझ्या सत्पथाने चालण्यास प्रेरणा व कृपा दे, आमेन.
