पहिले वाचन : १ राजे १७:७-१६
वाचक : राजांच्या पहिल्या पुस्तकातून घेतलेले वाचन "परमेश्वर एलियाद्वारे जे वचन बोलला त्याप्रमाणे तिचे ते पिठाचे मडके रिकामे झाले नाही."
काही दिवसांनी ओहोळ आटून गेला, कारण साऱ्या इस्राएल देशात पर्जन्यवृष्टी झाली नाही. तेव्हा एलियाला परमेश्वराचे असे वचन प्राप्त झाले की :
“चल, सिदोनातील सारफथ नगरात जाऊन राहा. पाहा, तुझे पोषण करण्याची तेथल्या एका विधवेला मी आज्ञा केली आहे.” त्याप्रमाणे तो सारफथ येथे गेला. नगराच्या वेशीजवळ तो आला तेव्हा एका विधवा स्त्रीला काटक्या गोळा करताना त्याने पाहिले. तिला हाक मारून तो म्हणाला, “मला एका पात्रात प्यायला थोडेसे पाणी घेऊन ये," ती पाणी आणायला जात असता त्याने तिला आणखी एकदा हाक मारून सांगितले, “आपल्या हाती एक भाकरीचा तुकडा माझ्यासाठी घेऊन ये." ती म्हणाली, “तुमचा देव परमेश्वर याच्या जीविताची शपथ, माझ्याजवळ भाकर मुळीच नाही, मडक्यात मूठभर पीठ आणि कुपीत थोडेसे तेल एवढे मात्र आहे. मी दोन काटक्या जमा करत आहे, मग मी घरी जाऊन माझ्यासाठी आणि आपल्या मुलासाठी ते तयार करीन. ते आम्ही खाऊ आणि मग मरू." एलिया तिला म्हणाला, “भिऊ नको, तू जा आणि म्हणतेस त्याप्रमाणे कर. पण त्यापूर्वी माझ्यासाठी एक लहानशी भाकर भाजून आण, नंतर आपल्यासाठी आणि आपल्या मुलासाठी भाज. कारण इस्राएल देव परमेश्वर म्हणतो, “परमेश्वर पृथ्वीवर पर्जन्यवृष्टी करील त्या दिवसापर्यंत तुझे पिठाचे मडके रिकामे होणार नाही आणि तेलाची कुपी आटणार नाही," तिने जाऊन एलियाच्या सांगण्याप्रमाणे केले. तो, ती आणि तिचे कुटुंब यांचा त्यावर पुष्कळ दिवस निर्वाह झाला. परमेश्वर एलियाच्या द्वारे जे वचन बोलला त्याप्रमाणे तिचे ते पिठाचे मडके रिकामे झाले नाही आणि तेलाची कुपीही आटली नाही.

First Reading : First Kings 17: 7-16
But after some time the torrent was dried up, for it had not rained upon the earth. Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying: Arise, and go to Sarephta of the Sidonians, and dwell there: for I have commanded a widow woman there to feed thee. He arose, and went to Sarephta. And when he was come to the gate of the city, he saw the widow woman gathering sticks, and he called her, and said to her: Give me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. And when she was going to fetch it he called after her, saying: Bring me also, I beseech thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand. And she answered: As the Lord thy God liveth, I have no bread, but only a handful of meal in a pot, and a little oil in a cruse: behold I am gathering two sticks that I may go in and dress it, for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die. And Elias said to her: Fear not, but go, and do as thou hast said: but first make for me of the same meal a little hearth cake, and bring it to me: and after make for thyself and thy son. For thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: The pot of meal shall not waste, nor the cruse of oil be diminished, until the day wherein the Lord will give rain upon the face of the earth. She went and did according to the word of Elias: and he ate, and she, and her house: and from that day The pot of meal wasted not, and the cruse of oil was not diminished, according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke in the hand of Elias.

१) हे माझ्या न्यायदात्या देवा,
मी तुझा धावा करतो तेव्हा माझे ऐक.
मला तू पेचातून मोकळे केले आहेस,
माझ्यावर कृपा कर, माझी प्रार्थना ऐक.
अहो मनुष्यांनो, माझ्या गौरवाची
अप्रतिष्ठा कोठवर चालणार ?
तुम्हाला निरर्थक गोष्टी कोठवर आवडणार?
तुम्ही लबाडीची कास कोठवर धरणार ?
२) तरी हे ध्यानात ठेवा की, परमेश्वराने आपणासाठी
भक्तिमान मनुष्य निवडून काढला आहे.
मी परमेश्वराचा धावा करीन तेव्हा तो माझे ऐकेल.
त्याची भीती बाळगा, पाप करू नका,
अंथरुणात पडल्यापडल्या मनाशी विचार करा; स्तब्ध राहा.
३) "आमचे कल्याण कोण करील ?"असे म्हणणारे पुष्कळ आहेत. हे परमेश्वरा, तू आपले मुखतेज आम्हावर पाड.
धान्याची आणि द्राक्षरसाची समृद्धी झाली
म्हणजे लोकांना जो आनंद होतो त्यापेक्षा अधिक आनंद
तू माझ्या मनात उत्पन्न केला आहेस.
